Volkswagen Polo GTI returns for 2021 with a new look, 204 hp


Volkswagen has unveiled the updated Polo GTI, which will feature technology and styling influenced by the larger Golf, but retains its 204bhp turbocharged petrol engine.

The GTI will return as the flagship of the Polo lineup, with an eighth-generation Golf-inspired design extending to a new front end, complete with the brand’s new signature lightbar and a redesigned rear.

As with the previous GTI, the front-wheel drive Polo will be powered by Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox; As of yet, there is no word on the long-standing manual gearbox option for the Ford Fiesta ST rival.

Torque is set at 236 lb-ft at 1,500-4,500 rpm, allowing the GTI to reach 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds.

The GTI benefits from an updated exterior design, with standard “IQ Light” LED matrix headlights to accompany the full-width front light bar. The company says the light bar “creates a stylish connection with Volkswagen’s battery-electric ID models and with the new generation of successful vehicles like the Golf, Arteon and Tiguan.”

A new bumper design refreshes the rear, while standard 17-inch alloy wheels are available in a new design based on that used by the Golf. The Polo GTI also receives dynamic indicators for the first time.

In terms of equipment, the GTI is based on the standard version of Polo’s Life, which features an 8-inch central infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The red interior trim seen on the previous model returns to mark the hot hatch.

The company’s Discover Pro and Discover Media systems are optional, and the car also receives Volkswagen’s new ‘digital cockpit’ instrument panel configuration, used by the Golf and ID 3. Other options include a roof panoramic opening, voice control, wireless charging, a Beats audio system and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Three driving modes are available: Eco, Normal and Sport, the latter offering an enhanced exhaust note. The Polo GTI also comes with a bespoke performance-oriented chassis, lowering the body by 15mm compared to the standard Polo and adding a large stabilizer to the front axle of the car, rigid coupling rods to the rear. ‘front and more rigid axle positioning brackets at the rear.

The Polo also benefits for the first time from Volkswagen’s Travel Assist system, including adaptive cruise control, lane assist, side assist and rear traffic alert. Autonomous emergency braking is also standard, as is the Driver Alert System and Post-Collision Automatic Braking.

Volkswagen has yet to reveal pricing for the new Polo GTI, and more information should emerge in the coming months.
