Kia is ready to launch its Carens in the Indian market. Reservations for the new minivan will begin on January 14. Kia has released a new TVC for the Carens in which the manufacturer describes the characteristics of the upcoming MPV.
The video begins by showing Carens’ design which is quite bold and looks like an SUV. There are LED daytime running lights up front which Kia calls Star Map DRL. A similar design was carried over to the rear lights.
Then we see an electric sunroof, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting in 64 colors, a Bose audio system with 8 speakers, spotlights, a 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto. and Apple CarPlay, Kia’s connected car technology, an air purifier with virus and bacteria protection and 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels.
Kia offers many safety features as standard with the Carens. It includes 6 airbags, electronic stability control, front and rear disc brakes, vehicle stability management, brake assist, downhill brake control, anti-lock braking system, parking sensors rear and tire pressure monitoring system as standard.
Other notable features include a one-touch power tilting seat for the second row, 5 USB Type-C ports for charging, leather upholstery, roof rails, rear parking camera with dynamic directions, a keyless entry, one push button to start / stop the engine, digital instrument panel, multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, anti-glare rearview mirror, wireless charger with cooling function and rain-sensing windshield wipers .
Kia will offer the Carens in five variants. There will be Premium, Prestige, Prestige Plus, Luxury and Luxury Plus. Depending on the variant, the interior color and pattern of the seats would be different. All variants except Luxury Plus would be offered as a 7-seater vehicle. Only the top-of-the-line Luxury Plus variant would be offered with an option of captain’s seats for the second row.
Carens would be offered with three engine options. There would be a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a 1.5-liter diesel engine, and a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine would only be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The diesel engine would be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. The turbo petrol engine will only be offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
The turbo petrol and diesel engine with manual gearbox will be offered with all variants. The diesel engine with automatic gearbox will only be offered with the top-of-the-range variant. The 1.5-liter petrol engine will only be offered on the Premium and Prestige variants. The petrol turbo with DCT gearbox will be offered on the Prestige Plus and Luxury Plus variants. The turbo gasoline engine also has three drive modes. There are Sport, Normal and Eco.
Awards and rivals
Prices for Kia Carens are expected to start from Rs. 15 lakhs ex-showroom and go up to Rs. 20 lakhs ex-showroom. It would compete with Hyundai Alcazar, Toyota Innova Crysta, Mahindra Marazzo, Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus.
